The Path Forward
In November 2017, FHMP and Perkins Eastman began meeting to process information gathered and learned during the competition, and to continue development of the design proposal. The 3 design team finalists produced renderings for Harvey Milk Plaza as part of the design competition. The community, technical advisors, jurors, city agencies and FHMP contributed a vast breadth of input and feedback on the designs proposed and ultimately influenced the team selected to win the overall competition. The competition resulted in identifying the design team who will begin the design process taking into consideration these proposed big ideas from the 33 entrants, as well as new and alternative ideas. This process will continue to engage and interact with the community, city planning and public works experts, engineering expertise, art and historical influences, and a plethora of individuals and organizations to assist in this community centric project.
The reimagining of Harvey Milk Plaza is a multifaceted project that includes leadership and collaboration with SF agencies working to address the burgeoning population growth across the city which has directly impacted the Castro Muni Metro Station and Harvey Milk Plaza. Transit, urban planning and safety are critical elements incorporated into this process. As with any project in its early stages, substantial changes to the design are expected based on more public feedback, technical, and engineering concerns.
FHMP plans for future public meetings at various stages of design development. FHMP understands that community input is critical. We will be scheduling community engagement opportunities to share feedback, input, and ideas to ensure this is a welcome and successful project in our beloved community. We encourage anyone interested to please add your email to our distribution list to keep abreast of these community engagement opportunities and STAY INFORMED!
