Windows for Harvey is a neighborhood-wide celebration honoring Harvey Milk around the time of his birthday on May 22. Participating neighborhood merchants and artist-designers create installations inspired by Harvey and his legacy.
May 22, 2018 - Harvey Milk Day, Harvey Milk Club
The Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club hosted the 4th Annual Harvey Milk Day screening of the award winning documentary, The Times of Harvey Milk, at the Castro Theatre.
Following the screening was the unveiling of a Harvey Milk mural by Oz Montania and the limited edition Stoli Vodka Harvey Milk Bottle, featuring live music by Debby Holiday and a meet and greet with Stuart Milk.
May 19, 2018 - Harvey Milk Day Celebration
On May 22, 1930, LGBT pioneer Harvey Milk was born. Known as "the Mayor of Castro Street", Harvey ignited the country and undoubtedly, the world, by advocating for hope, equality and inclusion.
FHMP continued the tradition of celebrating the life, legacy and unfinished work of Harvey Milk. The event began with the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band, followed by remarks from CA State Senator Scott Wiener, CA State Senator Mark Leno, Supervisor Jeff Sheehy, City College of SF Board of Trustees member Rafael Mandelman and others before proceeding down Castro Street to the Castro Camera storefront at 575 Castro, where the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus concluded the celebration!
Historic Street Car 1051, dedicated to Harvey Milk, was positioned on the inactive tracks near Jane Warner Plaza and available for visitors to explore this local treasure!
May 15, 2019 - Harvey Milk Plaza Community Meeting
On Tuesday, May 15, 2018, Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza hosted the fourth and final of a series of Community Meetings. The content presented in this meeting included a recap of the third Community Meeting and feedback collected at the third Community Meeting and the feedback received from online platform, Neighborland. Following a short presentation of the evolved design being presented at this meeting was an Open House where FHMP, Perkins Eastman and SFMTA were available to answer questions and collect additional feedback on this revised design.
April 19, 2018 - Give OUT Day
FHMP participated in the largest single day online fundraising event for the LGBTQ communities and supportive allies. We applaud those who joined the movement to #HonorHarveyMilk by supporting Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza in creating a new and revitalized Harvey Milk Plaza in San Francisco that will mobilize generations to carry forward the global movement for social justice. Thank you for including us in the many important causes you may be choosing to support this year, including one donation dedicated to Don Edwards & David Hickey.
April 7, 2018 - Harvey Milk Plaza Community Meeting
On Saturday, April 7, 2018, Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza hosted the third of a series of four Community Meetings. The content presented in this meeting included a recap of the second community meeting which distilled (a) priorities for an inspirational memorial component include hope, lgbtqhistory, community solidarity, coming out, activism, and the journey; and (b) priorities for successful public space include places to stay and enjoy, seating, people watching, scalable gathering, context of site in neighborhood, consider the whole intersection, multifunctional space and a place to speak and be seen. Together, we will #HonorHarveyMilk.
March 3, 2018 - Harvey Milk Plaza Community Meeting
On Saturday, March 3, 2018, Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza hosted the second of a series of four Community Meetings. The content presented in this meeting included a recap of the first community meeting which distilled four community determined criteria for a successful Harvey Milk Plaza: Harvey Milk Memorial, Universal Access, Public Space and Public Health/Security/Safety. Together we will #HonorHarveyMilk.
January 27, 2018 - Harvey Milk Plaza Community Meeting
On Saturday, January 27, 2018, Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza hosted the first of a series of four Community Meetings. These meetings are intended to be a participatory process between community stakeholders and the architects through which the visions and inspiration from the community will translate into guiding principles for concept design. For the first meeting, it was important to provide background on the site, the project, the opportunity and the importance of community engagement in this process. Together we will #HonorHarveyMilk.
November 27, 2017 - Harvey Milk Plaza, 6pm. Candlelight Vigil commemorating the 39th Anniversary of the assassinations of supervisor Harvey Milk and mayor George Moscone. The Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club organized the vigil, and Co-President Carolina Morales talked about Milk's legacy of social justice and inclusion, and of how he worked to unite the labor and LGBT movements.
November 8, 2017 - Jane Warner Plaza, 6pm. 40th Anniversary Celebration commemorating Harvey Milk's election to the SF Board of Supervisors + 20th Anniversary of the iconic rainbow flag being raised at the corner of Castro & Market Streets. Event co-hosted by Kate Kendell, Executive Director at NCLR and Gregg Cassin, Community Activist. The evening included performances and reflections from Anne Kronenberg, Gwenn Craig, Allan Baird, Carol Ruth Silver, Tom Ammiano, Jeff Sheehy, Janice Mirikitani, Ramona Webb, and Breanna Sinclaire. Ben Davis from Illuminate debuted 2 public art installations, "Harvey's Halo" and "Hope Will Never Be Silent".
