EVENTS

Harvey Milk Plaza is situated at the entrance of the Castro Street Muni Station, which was built in 1980. In 1985, the plaza area was named in honor of the civil rights activist and elected official Harvey Milk, who lived and worked on Castro Street before he and then-Mayor George Moscone were both assassinated in 1978. Harvey led soapbox political rallies at the plaza which has since been used as a gathering place for community protests and celebrations. The site serves hundreds of commuters daily, as well as thousands of tourists who come through the transit station on their way to visiting the famous neighborhood.

Please join us to Honor Harvey Milk on November 8, 2017!

November 8, 2017 is the 40th Anniversary of Harvey Milk's 1977 barrier-breaking election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors as California's first openly gay elected official. That night Milk returned to the Castro where he received a “tumultuous and moving welcome” home.

November 8th is also the 20th Anniversary of the giant rainbow flag first being raised in the Castro, so there's plenty to celebrate. We are planning something truly special.

The Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza and Illuminate will be hosting a large-scale, peaceful and positive public gathering at the intersection of Castro & Market streets to honor the life and legacy of Harvey Milk and to reaffirm San Francisco and California's enduring commitment to equality.

Illuminate is the extraordinary nonprofit behind The Bay Lights and the recent beloved lighting of the Conservatory of Flowers for the Summer of Love. The evening and the public art debut is an exciting collaborative effort between Illuminate and the Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza. We hope you will join us!
