JOIN THE 40TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION!

November 8, 2017 at Harvey Milk Plaza from 6pm – 7pm

Please join the Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza and renowned arts collaborative Illuminate, as we unveil two light art installations to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Harvey Milk's election to office.

On this day in 1977, Harvey Milk secured his position as California's first openly gay elected official in a barrier-breaking election to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. This November 8 is also the 20th anniversary of the giant rainbow flag first being raised in the Castro. Both anniversaries give us plenty to celebrate, and we are planning something truly special.

We are hosting a large-scale, peaceful and positive public gathering at the intersection of Castro & Market streets to honor the life and legacy of Harvey Milk. Our goal is to reaffirm San Francisco and California's enduring commitment to equality, and to highlight the effort underway to create a plaza that will engage and inspire people to carry forth Harvey's message of inclusivity and equality.

As part of this event, we are working with an extraordinary arts nonprofit, ILLUMINATE…the team behind The Bay Lights and the recent beloved lighting of the Conservatory of Flowers for the Summer of Love. ILLUMINATE and the Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza will be unveiling two amazing works of public art on November 8th.

What's missing? YOU. Please join us to celebrate Harvey Milk and reaffirm your own commitment to ensuring equality for all.

About Illuminate

ILLUMINATE rallies large groups of people together to create impossible works of public art that, through awe, free humanity's better nature. The aim of art is higher than art, so ILLUMINATE aims very high. Their highly aspirational mission of changing humanity’s future for the better via public art—some would call it impossible—is a reflection of their core beliefs. The best of their projects will always be radically accessible, free to experience and widely viewable.

An OPPORTUNITY to reimagine Harvey Milk Plaza

Congratulations to Team Perkins Eastman, selected as the winner of the competition to reimagine Harvey Milk Plaza!

In the spring of 2017, the Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza, in collaboration with SFMTA’s accessibility and accessibility upgrades project, launched a design competition to reimagine Harvey Milk Plaza as a redesigned public gathering space that truly honors Harvey Milk and the LGBT civil rights movement.

“We are excited to share these three finalists who represent very distinct design approaches that re-envision this important public space. Recognizing the important role of the community, two community meetings were held back in January to kick-off this redesign effort. We then took that input and folded it into the design brief and now we see the community's ideas present in the shortlisted designs," stated Andrea Aiello, President of the Friends of Harvey Milk Plaza and Executive Director of Castro/Upper Market Community Benefit District.

“We received an overwhelming response from talented design teams to the call to redesign and reimagine the space at the corner of Castro and Market Streets. The submissions illustrated the social and environmental challenges in this important LGBT and civil rights memorial and public gathering space,” says Jennifer Jones, CAE, IOM, Executive Director of AIASF.

On October 31, 2017, the design team led by Perkins Eastman was selected as the winner of the design competition to reimagine Harvey Milk Plaza.
